Building a skincare routine is like building a good wardrobe. It’s best to start with the staples like jeans and t-shirts first, then add more items (like chunky hipster cardigans and poncy pocket squares) as you learn what works for you.
If your skincare routine so far consists of water and nothing else, then forget serums, essences and any other product that sounds like some kind of potion from World of Warcraft. For beginners, just keep it simple, make it affordable, and avoid bombarding your skin with too many new things at once. After all, you’re trying to make your skin look amazing, not freaked out from product overload.
Where to start?
Building an arsenal of skincare products to make you look more distinguished than George Clooney is easy if you just think about what you want your skincare to do.
At the very least, a basic skincare routine should do the following:
● Clean your skin
● Keep your skin moisturised without looking like an oil slick
● Give you the flawless skin of a young Brad Pitt
The good news is that you can achieve all of these things with just three basic products— and you don’t even have to use all of them every day.
Skincare essential #1: face wash
At the very least, you need to wash your face. As well as cleansing your skin, a damn good face wash will tighten your pores, even out your skin tone and provide it with all the nourishment it needs from essential oils and other good-for-your-face natural ingredients. Not to mention it’s a great way to feel human again when you wake up hungover— though we can’t promise it will wash away the memories of everything that happened after that eighth tequila shot.
Skincare essential #2: moisturiser
Leaving the house without moisturiser is like leaving the house without pants. It’s not exactly a great look and people are probably going to look at you and wonder where it all went wrong.
To get your skin looking super soft and hydrated and avoid the judgment of strangers, bust out a moisturiser that has everything you need. We’re talking about moisturising shea butter and other oils, because we’re sorry to tell you that water is not enough to hydrate your skin. That’s not how that works. At all.
Skincare essential #3: face scrub
Yes, it’s a third product. Before you start panicking about how you’re going to fit three new products on your bathroom shelf when that space is already occupied by the many tiny slivers of soap you’ve moulded into one giant epic soap ball, you don’t actually have to use this every day! Don’t worry soap monster, your territory is safe.
Our face scrub doesn’t contain the extracts of an ancient tyrannosaurus rex powerful enough to wash away the sins of your past. But it does contain Walnut Shell and other exfoliating ingredients to scrub away dead skin and other unattractive stuff while also conditioning you skin. Use this 2-3 times a week, after cleanser and before moisturiser.
So there you have it: 3 basic products to transform you from unkempt man child to fresh-faced gentleman. If you have any other questions, shoot them through to us at Charles + Lee.
